Knowing your worth is one of the most valuable pieces of knowledge you can ever possess. We are conditioned to compare ourselves to others who seem to have a better quality and/or item. Money, beauty, love, newest iPhone. We can go on and on. This is just how society has molded our minds to think and respond.
In one of his books, John C. Maxwell shared a story regarding his friend, Gary Smalley, providing a simple, yet brilliant example of value in a literal sense.
"BEFORE AN AUDIENCE OF NEARLY TEN-THOUSAND PEOPLE, GARY HELD OUT A CRISP FIFTY DOLLAR BILL AND ASKED THEM, “WHO WOULD LIKE THIS FIFTY-DOLLAR BILL?” HANDS STARTED GOING UP EVERYWHERE. “I AM GOING TO GIVE THIS FIFTY DOLLARS TO ONE OF YOU,” HE SAID, BUT FIRST LET ME DO THIS.” HE PROCEEDED TO CRUMPLE UP THE BILL. THEN HE ASKED, “WHO STILL WANTS IT?” THE SAME HANDS WENT UP IN THE AIR. “WELL HE CONTINUED, WHAT IF I DO THIS?” HE DROPPED IT ON THE GROUND AND STARTED TO GRIND IT INTO THE FLOOR WITH HIS SHOE. HE PICKED IT UP, ALL CRUMPLED AND DIRTY. “NOW, WHO STILL WANTS IT?”
AGAIN, HANDS WENT INTO THE AIR. “YOU ALL HAVE LEARNED A VALUABLE LESSON, ” GARY SAID. “NO MATTER WHAT I DO TO THE MONEY, YOU STILL WANT IT BECAUSE IT DOESN’T DECREASE IN VALUE. IT IS STILL WORTH FIFTY DOLLARS."
It is a wonderful example that no matter what we have gone through, we still hold our value. This knowledge is very powerful and important to remember whenever you are triggered to think we need to fit into a "mold".
As individuals, we are what make the world turn, our individuality is what makes the world incredible! If innovators of the past were guided only by what others were doing, life wouldn't be as evolved and progressive as it is today. We wouldn't function in the way we do now with decisions being made at warp speed as we scroll through our news feed and apps about the new products we are going to buy or new book we want to read.
It amazes me how far technology has come since my brother and I were plugging in our Atari for the first time as youngsters. It is INSANE where we are now. This is what it takes to progress. Own, respect, nourish and embrace your individuality. Your own unique mind, goals and future are what will help make the world a better place for your children, grandchildren and lineage.
